While we had excellent applications to deploy Skype on our phones with Symbian, the formal application has been in Beta since December.
However, yesterday, and after killing the support Windows Mobile phones, Skype has just launched its application in the Ovi Store, ready to be downloaded by anyone.
Skype allows us to make calls, either via WiFi or 3G, to other Skype users and numbers anywhere in the world, which could mean significant savings in cost of international calls, for example, or even the sending of messages abroad .
Unfortunately, I found the option of video calls but the audio quality is definitely superior. The interface is quite simple, allowing us to choose the contact to quickly call. However, I must say I had a couple of "crashes" on my 5800 while sailing through the menus.
Good news, then, for all users of Symbian smartphones. With Skype offering solid support, and Ovi Maps (which is probably one of the best free mapping applications, far superior even to the iPhone), it seems we're seeing a "last gasp of Symbian S60, before being replaced by Symbian v 3 (and Symbian v 4).
